The Clockwork Queen of Oz
A Graphic Novel
An ongoing (on hiatus) collaborative personal project that challenges me to be disciplined in my own craft, producing a page weekly, working directly with the writer to give input and take direction, design and maintain the webpage and social media, and design the layout of each book and manage printing.
Deliverables:
Weekly web comic page updates with printed paperback comic-style chapter books
Outcome:
Two chapter books completed
STRATEGY + APPROACH
Alex Bates writes the story. After sharing the chapters with me, together we work out the thumbnails, page layouts, and the basic concept art for the entire chapter.
I create full rough sketches for each page which are reviewed with Alex for final direction. The sketches are then traced onto the final page, and inked in chronological order, scanned and published each week.
WHAT HAPPENED?
We completed and printed the first two chapters, and had started to merchandise with stickers, prints and enamel pins. Alex attended several ComicCons across the West Coast, and we garnered some great attention.
THE OUTCOME?
Alex still carries both chapters, both currently in the second edition.
The project has been on hiatus while I have been raising little kids, but we hope to return to this one day in the near future.
