The Power of Paper

Last year I signed up for a week long print design course, which was highly focused on packaging. #swoon.
I happened to be a lucky winner of a paper sample bundle, and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Ya’ll know I’m a big nerd, right?!

Now that I do print design projects for small businesses and brands as my side hustle, I also know that making an extraordinary impact is all in the details. If a brand delivers with details that delight, they create a connection with their customer both physically AND emotionally.
Every interaction leaves an impression. The best thing a business can do is create a first impression that becomes a lasting impression.
Here are 4 things to ponder about paper:
Quality of Paper:
The quality of paper you chose for marketing materials (like your business cards, brochures, and flyers) directly affects the first impression your business makes on potential customers. High-quality paper conveys professionalism, may increase customer trust and loyalty, and can increase the perceived value of your business services or products. Conversely, lower-quality, cheap paper may convey a lack of professionalism.
Paper Type:
Heavier papers get noticed and convey a sense of quality; textured papers differentiate your brand and engages your customers senses. Such tactile experiences inspires trust and again increases your business' perceived value.
Sustainability:
The trend is in! Consumers want to see paper instead of plastic, recyclable packaging, and a focus on repurposing. Your paper choices can communicate your sustainable values through thoughtfully designed, paper-based packaging. But, it is crucial to balance eco-friendliness with the need for quality, durability, and costs.
Consistency:
Consistency in paper quality and type across all business materials can strengthen your brand identity, and make the business more memorable. Use the same or comparable paper stock across all your packaging. If you use brown Kraft for your belly bands, use brown Kraft for your card inserts.
The careful selection of paper types is not merely a matter of aesthetics. It is a strategic decision that impacts branding, customer perception, and environmental responsibility.
If you own a small business, you should consider your paper choices as an integral part of your brand, and know how it can impact and ensure long-term success.
